As an organization, Abilities takes pride in our diverse workforce, which makes Black History Month an incredibly important part of celebrating diversity. It’s an excellent opportunity to reflect on how much progress has been made in creating a more equitable and inclusive society while also recognizing how far we still need to go in creating true equality for all people. As we celebrate Black History Month, let us also recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of our African heritage staff to those individuals who receive our support.
Abilities has been supporting individuals with diverse abilities for 25 years, and diversity in the workplace is crucial because it encourages creativity, innovation and collaboration. From our perspective, a diverse workforce brings a variety of perspectives and experiences to the table, which can lead to better problem-solving skills, new ideas, and positive relationships. For the last 25 years, I have been enormously fortunate to collaborate with and meet people from a multitude of African countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania – just to mention some. Without a doubt, embracing diversity and inclusion strengthens us as a collective.
